About PACAT

People Against Cruelty in Animal Transport PACAT was formed in the mid 1990s by a group of concerned people living or working in Fremantle, Western Australia. Western Australia conducts around 75% of Australia's live animal export trade.

Animals are trucked to Fremantle Port so that they can be exported live to Asia and the Middle East for slaughter. Each year Australia ships over 3.5 million animals overseas to countries that have no animal welfare standards. The vast majority of animals exported live from Australia are sheep and cattle, and there has been a significant rise in the number of goat, buffalo and camel exports. PACAT believe that the unnecessary animal suffering inflicted by the live animal export trade is totally unacceptable. Our objective is to bring the trade to an end and replace it with a more humane and economically viable option.

PACAT members come from all walks of life. Some are vegetarians and some are meat-eaters. Some of our members are local residents disgusted with the stench, road noise and dust from the trucks, as well as the sight of distressed animals. Others are former meat workers who have lost their jobs to the live export trade, or current meat workers. We also have members who are farmers who are concerned about how their animals are treated once they have left their care and our shores.

The common goal we all share is the abolition of live animal export. We believe that the existing trade could be successfully replaced with an already established and viable halal-accredited chilled and frozen carcass industry. Animals could then be slaughtered within Australia under animal welfare provisions. To date there has been little effort to develop this approach and PACAT continues to lobby parliamentarians for humane alternatives. A local halal - accredited chilled meat trade would also benefit the local economy and create jobs within Australia.

The barbaric live animal export trade causes suffering to millions of Australian animals and brings no credit to Australia. PACAT advocates that Australia should take the lead and set an example to the rest of the world by abolishing this archaic, cruel and unnecessary industry.

If you share our views please join us and help us bring an end to this gross exploitation. Millions of exported animals need your help.
